Glass melting is the process in which glass objects are melted by directing the molten glass into a mold where it solidifies. The technique has been used since the 15th century BC. both in ancient Egypt and in Mesopotamia. Modern cast glass is formed by a variety of processes such as furnace casting or sand casting, graphite or metal molds.

Furnace casting involves the preparation of a mold consisting of a mixture of plaster and refractory materials such as silica. A model can be made from any solid material, such as wax, wood or metal, and after a cast of the model is taken (a process called veneering) the model is removed from the mold and the glass is melted into the blank. The inclusion of murrine and colored glass makes each work unique and unrepeatable.
