The making of murrine has always been one of the most characteristic specialties of Murano production. Their use finds its maximum expression in the creation of plates and bowls since the surface is large enough to allow the creation of very suggestive harmonies and plays of colours.   

The creation of a murrina requires that there are various melted glass crucibles in different colors in the furnace. It is taken with a metal rod

a small quantity of glass from the first crucible, immediately covering it with other glass taken from a second crucible. This is how we proceed by superimposing several layers of color and modeling on molds with flower-shaped, star-shaped ribs and a thousand other motifs. All these layers of glass will form a cylinder weighing five or six kilograms which is pulled to bring it to the programmed diameter. The rods thus obtained are used to produce

pearls, bowls, plates, vases, pendants and everything that the artist's imagination

suggest.

To make a bowl, on the other hand, it is necessary to perform a cold composition of cane sections (higher than those used for pearls) forming a disc of the desired size, and then bring it to fusion. A compact disc will be obtained which, after cooling, must be ground and positioned on a ceramic mould. By bringing everything back to temperature, the disc will take the shape of the mold underneath. Subsequently the object is finished with a grinding operation.
